Often referred to as the original mechanical key switch, the Cherry MX Red is the most popular Cherry MX switch. It features a quiet mechanism, a smooth feel and a medium activation force of 45g. However, the Gateron linear switches do offer a smoother experience, with the red, yellow, and black switches offering a good coverage of light, medium, and heavy(ish) activation.

Summary

As you would expect from the original Cherry MX, the Reds have a nice smooth feel. I do slightly prefer the Gateron linear switches though, which have an even smoother feel.
Criteria
- High quality switch with a nice smooth feel.
- Ideal activation force for gaming allowing fast and responsive keypresses.
- Activation force may be too light for typists causing accidential key presses.
- Gateron linear switches are smoother ... and cheaper.
